…it’s just flour, butter and sugar!

Here are my thoughts on the worth of a small business bakery cake.

You are paying for my expertise, time, labor, the cost of quality ingredients, my overhead, the supplies for your cake, the time for me to shop for the ingredients, clean up, equipment, etc. I would like to make at least $15 per hour (which I feel is fair, but realistically not very much) and making a cake from measuring/weighing all the ingredients, mixing, baking, making the frosting, then stacking, filling and frosting the cake takes at least 3 hours for my smallest cake.

Grocery store cakes are made in a factory, frozen then shipped to the grocery store. They are made with cheap ingredients, filled with chemicals and preservatives, that the large companies can get for pennies. The frosting is from a large tub that is made with shortening and corn syrup.

You are also supporting a small, local business, which all small business owners truly appreciate. You are paying for a modern design that you can customize, something that your guests will “ooo” and “ahh” over and will ask for another piece. You will undoubtedly receive many compliments from them, making you the hero of the party.

why are your cakes so expensive?

When you receive your cake there will be an envelope that has a diagram on how to cut the cake.

All single cakes sits on a cardboard circle which is 2 inches larger than the cake. For example: if you order a 10 inch cake, it will be on a 12 inch board.

All double cakes will have a board for each tier the exact size of the tier and then on a sturdy base that is 2 inches bigger than the size of the bottom tier. Inside the bottom tier will be jumbo straw supports that the top tier is resting on with one long dowel or straw through the middle of both tiers.

All triple cakes will have a board for each tier the exact size of the tier and then on a sturdy base that is 2 inches bigger than the size of the bottom tier. Inside the bottom and middle tiers will be jumbo straw supports that the tiers are resting on, as well as a long dowel that runs through the middle of all three tiers.
